Momposonica is a Latino American alternative rock band that combines punk, pop, latin percussion and electronic music, formed in United States.

Momposonica was formed in mid 2003 in Englewood, New Jersey by five Colombian expatriates, guitarist Felipe Taborda, drummer Martin Quintero, lead vocalist Luis Garcia, percussionist David Pinto and bassist Alessandro Rueda. Mauricio Molina joined the band in 2008 to play the bass and Salvadoran singer–songwriter Carolina Craig joined the band in 2009. Momposonica is a mix of garage rock, pop, Latin and electronic rhythms. In 2006 Momposonica signed a record deal with legendary trombone salsero Jimmy Bosch’s label, JRGR records. This same year after several weeks of pre-production, Momposonica entered the studio to record their first self title album Momposonica with Jimmy Bosch. Jimmy is a producer and a world renowned trombonist, who has collaborations with artist such us Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri, Ruben Blades, the Lebron Brothers, La India, Celia Cruz and Marc Anthony. Momposonica’s first album was released in United states on August 8th 2006 by JRGR records and it was distributed for RED Distribution/SonyBMG.

The name Momposonica refers partly to Mompos, a town in Colombia and partly to the American garage rock band The Sonics and pays tribute to the work of Afro-Colombian singer and cultural preservationist Totó la Momposina.

In 2009 Momposonica recored their latest album Sistema de Cambio, an album with a more straightfoward rock sound without losing their progressive Latin elements.

“Momposonica, like Santana, bridges cultures neatly, and their allegiance is more to the rock half of the equation than the Latin half”. ~ Jeff Tamarkin, All Music.
